Dave in Reading

I was at the Forbury bandstand in Reading on Sunday 7 September 2014 and very much enjoyed hearing the WSLSB play. The audience was a little larger than usual and perhaps more attentive too. The band played a large variety of styles and I particularly enjoyed the swing numbers. I'm no expert, but I thought that the band made a very "full" sound when they were playing forte. So, thank you very much, WSLSB, for the splendid entertainment you provided me and the many others on Sunday afternoon.

Dear Jane and Friends at WStLSB Thank you so much for inviting us to the party on Saturday; it was so lovely to be back amongst you again. The standard of playing is fantastic – well done to you all! Thank you to the Ladies, who gave us a splendid meal, and to the ‘backroom staff’ who kept it all going so smoothly. Tony is enjoying the biscuits (I’ve given them up for Lent), and he is under instructions not to eat them all before Easter! Love to you all, Alison and Tony

Mike Bayliss

I have by chance come upon the mention on your website of your 1st Baritone John Shaw who recently played an ophicleide concerto with your band. As a fellow ophicleidist (and also a former baritone player!), may I say congratulations to John - we need more of this sort of thing to convince people that the ophi is not some weird beast but, for over half the 19th century, was the staple brass bass of bands and orchestras. More people than might be thought are again taking up this fine-sounding instrument in the 21st century, and anything that fosters an awareness of its presence is to be strongly encouraged. Well done to John ,and I hope there will be a lot more of this to come! Best wishes, Mike

Hi All, Glad to see you're still as busy as ever! I still "pop in" to the website to keep an eye on you all. I'm having a sabbatical from banding at the mo to concentrate on my flying...but when I have my wings... i'll unstick the old valves and get back to "Barrying!"

Dear Band Many thanks for your "leaving" card and all the good wishes. It has been great fun sitting around the band for the last 20 years on and off!! Visited some great venues over that time especially Cow Pond. May I wish you every success for the future and the release of the double CD ( I want a copy),,that was hard work but I am sure a great result was achieved. With Best Wishes Dave Rothery ps looks like I might be around until the end of June..so call if you are stuck over the next few weeks
